Frankly, if Singaporeans, young or old were to be given judgement of which sin we had flouted the most it would be gluttony. The second most committed sin would be pride - that we are proud to be gluttons. Just relying on this fact, shopping malls should just focus on food. You know even for Takashimaya, there is just not enough food despite a whole level of food. The way that things should be should be an entire block of food outlets, not like food courts but serious food restaurants and cafes that serve totally yummy food.
Why can't Singapore have some building that is just focusing on food? We have Funan IT mall and Sim Lim which is totally just gadgets and electronic stuff. Then we have Paragon that seriously sells high end goods and high class brands. And we also have Far East Plaza where small fashion stores retail imported brands from overseas or maybe some local designers. Then we have Lucky Plaza where maid agencies are the main highlight. The thing is that all these shopping centres have food courts, food facilities which means FOOD IS IMPORTANT!!!!
So why can't we have a shopping centre that just focuses on food, snacks or food related services where people can get their catering services, buffets from? Where is Singapore's Food Paradise?

I believe there HAS BEEN such a experiment and I think its a failure. The project I am talking about? (I'm not too sure of the name but its at Far East Square or near that) China square??? A 4 storey development consisting of only FOOD STALLS and a restaurant. Sure it proved to be quite a hit when it was originally launched but now? Lots of spaces left empty! Jus go visit on a sat evening, prime time for food courts I tell you, and u'll be happy to find 50% of the stalls open for business. Only the fish soup stall on the 1st floor (moved here from the ex-blanco court food centre) serves decent food.
So are we still interested in a ALL FOOD only complex???? reference Lau Pa sat...
Yummy...I looking forward to an entire block of food staffs....Japanese, Chinese, French, German, American restaurant all under one roof!!!
Must be cheap then is good... not cheap, even if the food is superb, I won't go cause it will just burn a hole through my pockets!!!
simply put...impratical and stupid...though we love food...but imagine a whole block of eateries and restaurants ONLY....nothing to be done except eat eat eat..there is a limit to eating...but apparently no limit to shopping ...so get it?!?!...but hor ..if there is a mall of buffets ..i dun mind....ha
well i don't think singaporeans really "shop" for food on purpose. retail therapy is good, but retail therapy in terms of food, woah, i'm watching my waistline!
The problem with China Square is that there's a lack of variety WITHIN the complex & loads of good stuff around it... that's overkill..
when you wanna talk about a specialty FOOD mall, it shld be rows of eateries and restaurants, not just repetitive hawker fare.. they should really take a page of the food districts from overseas..
where they allocated an entire floor to host a range of international offerings, serving fine european cuts, american roasts, authentic pastas, japanese and chinese crusine..
all we do really is eat, just bring on the worthy mix..
Wouldn't it good to bring in taiwan's Jian sha zhui or something similar into singapore? its not so much of a whole block of restaurants.. but shopping for small bites around the mall sounds FUN!!! and imagine shopping an hour or so, to make up all the tiny bites into one whole meal.. what a new alternative.. its no longer shopping for clothes, IT, accessories but FOOD!!! hahaha..
something like wad they did wif esplanade on the bay? The stretch of eateries/speciality restn and complemented by the 'new gluttons' square' food court?
Talking about food food FOOD.. Do people shop more or eat more? OF course EAT lah.. haha.. I do not know about others, but sometimes what drives me to each individual shopping malls is not the shops they offered but the food.. it may be a particular restuarant or even a stall in the foodcourt.. so food is very IMPORTANT!!!! Eating to live or living to eat? In either way, it's still F.O.O.D
a food complex may work out well actually.. but must be careful that it'll not be jus another "foodcourt", like that of chinasquare.
well personally, i wouldn't mind going if there's a good one in sg that serves good and maybe some unique cuisine at a reasonable price. hmmm preferably near a shopping mall too? haha.. yea, Singaporean jus love to shop! =)

Aren't our food centres and wet markets complexes that specialise in food. If you want more high class ones, check out Greenwood Ave and Chip Bee Gardens. But if you want one in Orchard Road,a mall that just deals with food, it will be tough my mate. Singaporeans are just not willing to pay so much more since they can get a decent meal at $3 from these food centres.
my views too. however, if this complex is in orchard, it may actualli work.
Food is transient, people can't spend all their time eating. Therefore to encourage people to linger in the mall, we now have the all in one mall, a new invention that was about 15 years back for singapore.
The new malls which we take for granted now contains cinemas, bowling alleys, a wide variety of entertainment, shopping and eating experiences.
Stand alones don't work that well. However, for food, its an exception, people need to eat and love to eat.
