That Favourite Place...

Everytime I go to Takashimaya, I find myself drawn to the basement level where time to time there are strange fairs like toy fairs, New Year Goodies Fair, sometimes even a fashion show with the runway and everything trendy. To be frank, it's not that I am interested in these events or what but no matter what, I find myself walking past and hanging out in this area.

I wonder, is it that I always hope something different will happen down there or is it the ice cream and all those snacks? You know, I can just go down there all the time and not buy anything cause everthing is so expensive but still go down there the next time even though I know I am not going to buy anything. (Although time to time I get some ice-cream from Gelare). Something about the level of food and snacks just draw me there. And then there is Kinokuniya. I can just walk around the whole bookstore and not buy anything. And I will always do that every time I go Taka. Some kind of sick obssessive disorder I bet.

There is just something about these shopping malls that make us young people do unproductive and senseless routines that could actually bore us but don't. Geez, shopping malls just corrupt young people - not by making them spend money but by spending time.

So is there such thing as a favourite place? Home? The mall? School? Or Macdonald's? I am sure one confused person...

Where is your favourite place in a shopping mall?Where is your favourite place in a shopping mall?
The Big Open Space (Atrium)
Large Departmental Stores like Robinsons, Mark and Spencers, Courts
Smaller Shops that typically sell clothes (Like Future State, Levi's, Osmose)
Where there are food and beverages to ease my hunger and thirst
Small shops that sell unique paraphernalia
Where I can get to read books and magazines for free!!!
Where there are varieties of music and performances for everyone to hear
Where all the electronic gadgets and gizmos are and I get to use them!!!
No particular favourite place; I hangout everywhere...
I don't like being in a shopping mall. The great outdoors...
Thank You

unless i've got something to buy in mind, or when i get dragged to follow them as they do their mindless shopping, there are only few places within a mall i'd like to hang out in..

one of the places are the eateries.. really enjoy going around trying new food joints, which explains why marina sqaure is a current hotspot for me.. also love to hang out at FOod republic at Wisma Atria and the area around takashimaya's foodcourt.. donuts!!

another thing i go for in shopping malls is Novelty.. i spent quite a bit of time in Apple's i-shop when it was 1st open, and also in modern toy stores like action city.. i even walked up and down one raffles quay when it finally opened for public...

so yeah, food and novelty, my space within shopping malls..

Being a typical singaporean with almost no income, generally I am wasting my time in shopping malls because :

1) There is nothing much to do in sg.
2) Clubbing is expensive in sg and I do not wish to wait for ladies night just to go partying.
3) Other than shoppping, singaporeans like watching movies and most cinemas are in a shopping mall, or in the vicinity of malls
4) id hang out at the beach if sg's beach werent that lousy
5) I am not a very sports person. I am sure that there are a considerable number of singaporeans who are not into sports.
6) Singaporeans are generally more adventurous in trying food then they are mountain climbing or bungee jumping for instance.
7) Shopping malls have air con and food, drinks readily available to feed your hungry stomachs after hanging out at the malls for too long.
8) Most singaporeans will tell you that 'reading' is their hobby and where else do you get your books other than the local library?

I dont exactly have a favourite mall. I have favourite shops that i buy from. Usually, ill just go to any of them depending on my mood or when was the last time i visited it. I also visit different malls in a day when I am trying to look for an item that comes in my size (same brand). So i guess all in all, i pick a mall based on its tenant mix. Most major malls has got food places anyway or within walking distance to one hearty meal!

i generally dont like food so i would say i don't really like to hang out at eateries unless i'm hungry futhermore foodcentres are usually overcrowded during peak hours.

coffee joints are much better, but somehow i don't usually find myself there.

hanging out at eateries is fun...especially ard eateries offering buffets and the like...seriously have u seen a shopping mall that makes us do sensible things ??..even after we settled and bough wad we needed...we will usually stay around to do some aimless and mindless shopping or eating or just hanging ard...thats wad atriums are for...to hang ard in the open space, to think abt wad to do next, to meet friends..see people etc...

Whenever i visit Parkway Parade, i will definately have a durian ice-cream. I will make my way to the shop no matter how far it is (especially if you enter the mall from the carpark). There will always be a long queue there that will somehow end up blocking the entrance of MPH. So i think i'm not the only one that doesn't mind the hassle.

For Taka, it always the food hall. If the square has a food event, even better. Sometimes you really get exotic food from these events.

Raffles City, also the basement food hall.

Food can really make a big difference to the shopping experience. It's a Singaporean thing.Look at our national TV shows. Dominated by food programs. Newspapers too.I'm sure we are prouder about this aspect than our singlish.

Yup. I particularly like the mooncake marketplace at TAKA! Its like a draw pt on its own. For me and many of my peers, that's like the number 1 and only place to get our mooncakes!

I am kind of the follower when it comes to window shopping. I just let the ladies take the lead. Where do they usually go? They head for the smaller shops where they can find fashion less common on the streets.

When I shop? Just like any other guy, straight to the point, hit and run. Haha

I usually just hang around the area if im waiting for someone or waiting for my movie to start.

Sometimes ill go to Kinokuniya and browse around, if something interests me, ill buy the book or if it is too ex, head up to the library and try to borrow it :)

Ya, but never shop there, it's beyond my income( no income ).

i think it's very gender-differentiated.. females would love window shopping.. it may turn out to be a de-stress for them too! But males would find it boring and aimless. hah.. its all perception!

do males find shopping a destress thingy as well?

My My!!

Found a fellow window-shopper hobbyist!!!

Honestly, where else can u BEST window shop than at a shopping mall where there's about everything n anything u wanna see!!! Toys, clothes, cutie ornaments and groceries (damn, do i enjoy strolling thru the shelves of food n beverages in the supermart)! I guess the reason y shopping malls r so crowded is coz SG is a totalli boring place to be in.

Other than watching movies, playing pool, eat, well i dun suppose u wanna stroll along Bishan Park do u? Unlike elsewhere where u can easili take ur pick for rustic, quiet locations to waste awae a dae thinking back, SG has onli East Coast part? well, throw in Sentosa if that's wat u gonna sae... But pt is, we have no where else to GO!!

Hooray to shooping malls! they offer the perfect place to waste ur time awae, looking at innovations, at other Bored pple, or tasting out the freebies at supermarts.. heh, ttz my fav btw..

hey but taka aint exactly the best place to go!! well, not unless u're there to align to fashion.. things there r juz so so EXP! and so out of reach!! argh... but i muz admit, their food paradize on basement 1's indeed alluring and definitely a lure.. heh

ya i agree taka's lil fair can be a drawing factor( i dig the fair recently, got alot of jap notebooks, stationeries and stuff... sooooo cute!!!!!). and taka has good food area,a wide range, affordable food court(alwas crowded,i quite hate it.) and other specialised stalls and inside there are Meiji,Godiva(right? or is it Royce?), Harrods, and small bistros of western-european food.
eh i cant help me notice that u make urself sound like a cheapo! im sure u do buy stuffs... =)

In the Asian context, Food is a definite excuse for a get-together, a gathering, a time for interaction and possible personal or business opportunities... From students' after-school hangouts to the business lunches of businessmen, eateries are an important part of Asian culture... ;p
